メリークリスマス! Merry Christmas!

December 12, 2009

Call me sentimental and childlike, but I’m five at Christmastime. Doesn’t matter how much older I get… the magic of the holidays hits me and I get giddy.

I am acutely aware that this is going to be my last holiday season in America for quite a while. I’m trying to absorb as much of it as possible. I want to remember the traditions that are going to be lost in Japan… traded in for their buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken, fancy store-bought cakes, and the romantic commercialism. I’m remembering old movies like Home Alone and The Santa Clause. I’m hanging stockings with care. I’m enjoying treats I can only get here!

I’m going back to my hometown for Christmas. In fact, I’m flying out Christmas morning. I’ve lived in Florida for five years, but I’m going to visit my family and reminisce on the old by gone days of my youth in Philadelphia. The (old) Wanamaker’s Light Show and the Dickens’ Christmas Carol Village.

I know the lights in Roppongi are stunningly beautiful… but it doesn’t make me coo *懐かしい* How nostalgic!
I choose the homemade feel of the Lakeland Christmas parade instead. My friends and I went the other night our hearts swelled with fireworks.

The floats came in all shapes and sizes. Gingerbread houses, reindeer, angels, and nutcrackers. Every childhood joy was put on display with smiling faces waving to friends in the crowd.

The theme was “Festival of Lights,” and childlike wonder and laughter that was warm inside of us all, glowed brightly on our faces.

I don’t know what my apartment is going to be like in Japan. I just know it’s going to be tiny. I doubt I’ll be able to buy a real evergreen to adorn my home with… but I’ll bring all the Christmas spirit with me. And as a well reformed Ebeneezer Scrooge faithfully promises in A Christmas Carol, “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year!”

My cozy home!
